The Power of Contentedness

I know these times aren't the easiest for all of us, but I am an optimist - I see the glass as refillable instead of half-full or half-empty. To brighten up your days, I publish the Regenerate Your World newsletter coming to your inbox on a bi-weekly basis.

Let's Get Empowered!

The Power of Contentedness

I am often most content in nature.

Dear Empowered Reader,

As I took time to think about what to share for this edition of the newsletter the topic of happiness came to mind. Writing this newsletter at the end of November the topic of happiness is especially relevant as we enter the holiday season, a time often marked by high expectations and the pressure to feel happy and fulfilled.

For many, this period becomes a whirlwind of busyness and external demands, leaving little room for reflection or contentment. As we approach the end of the year, it’s the perfect time to pause, reassess our priorities, and focus on cultivating a sense of contentment rather than chasing fleeting moments of happiness. The goal of this newsletter is to invite you to step back from the hustle and reconnect with what truly matters, setting the stage for a more mindful and fulfilling close to the year.

In a world that constantly tells us to "chase happiness" and "pursue more," it's easy to feel like we’re always falling short. But what if happiness, as it's often portrayed, isn’t the ultimate goal? What if the secret to a fulfilling life isn’t found in constant pursuit, but in learning to appreciate the present moment, to embrace the here and now? As we move through our careers and personal lives, it's time to redefine what success and well-being truly mean—and today, I want to explore the power of contentedness.

"Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty." – Socrates

This quote from Socrates reminds us that true wealth lies not in possessions or accomplishments, but in appreciating what we already have. Yes, there is truth that having your basic needs met is vital and I agree but what about once your needs are met? What then?

It's a radical shift from the message we often receive: that we must always strive for more—more success, more recognition, more happiness. But this endless chase can lead to dissatisfaction and burnout, rather than fulfillment. It's here that contentedness offers an alternative path, one that allows us to find peace and joy in the present moment, regardless of external circumstances.

One of the reasons contentment is so powerful is because it counteracts what psychologists call the hedonic treadmill. This concept explains how we quickly return to a baseline level of happiness after positive or negative life events. No matter how exciting a promotion, vacation, or new achievement might be, the thrill wears off, and we find ourselves wanting more. The pursuit of happiness becomes like running on a treadmill—we expend effort, but we never truly get anywhere.

Research shows that even major life changes, like winning the lottery or experiencing a significant setback, only temporarily affect our happiness. In time, we return to our pre-existing levels of happiness. This is why chasing happiness, as it’s traditionally defined, can leave us feeling perpetually unsatisfied. Contentment, on the other hand, teaches us to step off the treadmill and appreciate the steady joy found in everyday moments.

"Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product." – Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt’s wisdom hits at the heart of what many of us misunderstand about happiness. It’s not something we can achieve by constantly striving. Instead, it's something that arises naturally when we focus on living with purpose, cultivating relationships, and being present. This shift from happiness as an outcome to contentedness as a practice is one that can transform how we approach both our personal and professional lives.

I’ll be honest—there was a time when I believed the next accomplishment or the next milestone would finally bring me the lasting happiness I was seeking. I thought if I could just reach the next level in my career or hit a personal goal, I’d feel complete. But after each success, I found myself wanting more, wondering why the satisfaction didn’t last.

A turning point came during a particularly intense period of juggling multiple projects and turning down invitations from family and friends so that I could work extra hours. One afternoon, I paused to reflect on what was truly driving me and what is it that I truly value.  I realized that in my relentless pursuit of doing more, I was missing out on appreciating what I already had—an amazing community, fulfilling work, and the opportunity to make a real impact. That realization was the beginning of my journey toward contentedness. I began to focus less on external achievements and more on cultivating a sense of peace and satisfaction with the life I was living in the moment.

Research supports the idea that contentment, more than the fleeting highs of happiness, leads to a more sustainable sense of well-being. Studies show that people who practice gratitude, mindfulness, and acceptance of the present moment tend to experience higher levels of life satisfaction.

A study from the University of California found that practicing gratitude daily can increase overall well-being by up to 25%. Another study, published in The Journal of Positive Psychology, found that people who focus on their immediate experience rather than future desires report greater life satisfaction and emotional well-being. These findings reinforce the idea that contentment isn’t about settling for less, but about recognizing the abundance in the present moment.

Three Reflection Questions

  1. What do I have right now in my life—relationships, experiences, opportunities—that I am grateful for but may be taking for granted?

  2. How often do I find myself chasing after the next big achievement, and how does that impact my sense of fulfillment?

  3. What small changes can I make in my daily routine to cultivate contentment and appreciate the present moment?

We are often taught to keep pushing forward, to measure our success by external milestones. But true well-being and happiness isn’t about reaching a destination—it’s about the journey.

Contentment is the practice of finding joy in the every day, of recognizing that we already have what we need to feel fulfilled. It’s about breaking free from the hedonic treadmill and discovering that the path to well-being is rooted in presence, gratitude, and acceptance.

Let’s embrace the power of contentedness together. As you reflect on your own journey, remember that well-being is not something to chase, but something to cultivate—right here, right now.

Contentment Is An Attitude
Poet: Catherine Pulsifer

Contentment is an attitude

That many of us pass by

Focusing on the things we've yet to get

Rather than a smile we sigh!
It's something that demands patience and joy

For all of life has to giveWhen content we can enjoy even small gifts

Making life here so much more to live.
Let not discontentment find a space in your heart

Fill it instead with gratefulness, and gratitude

Rather than obsess over what could have been or will be,

Be satisfied with what you have, adjust your attitude.

This directed reflection process leads you through four terrains of exploration, stopping at points on the journey to consider key questions about awareness, letting go, vision, and realization. The terrains of your journey will take you into deeper observation of your feelings, thoughts, and images. You will explore what you need to let go of as you truly seek what you really want. We will open a space for a new vision and consider the practical steps to actualize that vision. We will deepen our insights in small circles of trust. Journaling and guided reflection will be used throughout the journey.

Insider Insights: Celebrating Three Years

Three-year celebration! Happy birthday Empower Possible!

Dear Empowered Reader,

I can hardly believe it—it’s been three years since I took the leap and launched Empower Possible! What started as a dream fueled by my own experiences of burnout turned into a passion for helping people find harmony in their hectic lives and blossomed into something more meaningful than I could have imagined. Today, I’m reflecting on how much we’ve grown together, and I feel overwhelming gratitude for this incredible journey.

When I first started Empower Possible, it was just me, an idea, and much hope. I had a vision, but I wasn’t sure how it would unfold. Those early days were filled with excitement and, yes, plenty of uncertainty. I wondered if anyone would join me on this mission to build a life where wellness wasn’t just a goal, but a daily practice. And then, slowly but surely, you did. We began planting seeds of change together, and now here we are—a community that has turned wellness into something real, practical, and transformative.

I’ll never forget the first workshop I hosted. I was nervous, hoping it would resonate with the attendees, but I quickly realized that this wasn’t just about me teaching—it was about us learning from each other. Each one of you has shared something that’s impacted me deeply—your stories, your challenges, your moments of growth. They’ve become the foundation of Empower Possible, reminding me every day why I started this in the first place.

Let me share one pivotal moment with you. It was about six months after launching Empower Possible, and I was feeling a sense of burnout creeping in again. Yes, even after all my efforts to create harmony, I realized I wasn’t following the advice I was giving. My calendar was overbooked, and I had little time for personal regeneration. One weekend, I decided to take a solo hike in the woods—a place I’ve always gone to recharge. I left my phone in the car and immersed myself in nature. As I walked, I reflected on what truly mattered to me and made a promise to myself: I would not lose sight of the well-being practices I had worked so hard to instill. That hike became a turning point, reminding me that regeneration is not a one-time event but a continuous practice that requires attention and intention. It was a lesson that shaped how I lead Empower Possible and serve this community today.

I’d love for you to take a moment and reflect on your journey.

Think back to three years ago—where were you in your well-being journey compared to today?

What have you discovered about yourself, your habits, or your mindset that has helped you grow?

And most importantly, how can you continue to prioritize your own well-being as you move forward into the next chapter of your life?

For me, these three years have reinforced one powerful truth: transformation is never easy, but it is always worth it. Every step forward, no matter how small, gets us closer to a life that feels aligned with who we truly are. There were moments when I wasn’t sure I was moving in the right direction—moments when doubt crept in—but every time, this community reminded me of the importance of persistence and the beauty of progress.

Another experience that profoundly shaped my approach to well-being came just last year. I was in the middle of preparing for a big keynote speech, and, once again, I found myself stretched thin. I decided to plan a small day retreat with a couple of friends.  I was hesitant to take time away however I knew how important it is to rest and recharge. During that day away, I had the chance to unplug, take a long walk in the woods, and just "be". It wasn’t until I slowed down that I realized how much I had been running on empty. That experience reminded me of the power of rest and reflection, and how essential they are for regeneration. It’s a lesson I now incorporate into every facet of my life and work—recognizing that regeneration comes from giving ourselves space to breathe, reflect, and recharge. Without it, we cannot sustain our well-being.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from you is that we never have to walk this path alone. I’ve seen firsthand how the connections we’ve built here are the cornerstone of personal growth. Each of you has shown me the incredible strength that comes from having a village—a support system that celebrates our wins, picks us up after setbacks, and reminds us of our power.

Speaking of power, I want to share a quote about power: “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” – Alice Walker. This hits home because it’s the core of what Empower Possible is all about—helping you remember that you already have the power to shape your life, your well-being, and your future. The small, daily choices you make? They add up, and they are so much more impactful than we often realize. Don’t underestimate the power of those little steps—they can lead to life-changing transformations.

As I look ahead, I’m excited for what’s to come. I have new programs and opportunities on the horizon—whether it’s diving deeper into our Mountain 10 workshops, new podcast guest appearances, or continuing to connect through these newsletters.

There’s so much more we can accomplish together, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being part of this community. Empower Possible wouldn’t be what it is without each of you.

Here’s to many more years of growth, empowerment, and well-being!

With heartfelt gratitude,

Julie Zaruba Fountaine

Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

April Fool's Day: Insights for Well-Being

April Fool's Day: Insights for Well-Being

My everyday mantra

Dear Empowered Reader

Welcome back to another edition of the Regenerate Newsletter where we embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, thank you for your readership!

This week, let's explore a rather unconventional topic with surprising insights - April Fool's Day. I have not always been a fan of April Fool's Day, I am not the one who likes to prank others so often I end up receiving the prank! I know it is all in good fun so I decided to reflect on what April Fool's Day can mean for our well-being. To bring a little perspective into the day I have not learned to appreciate as much as others. Let's begin with the origin of April Fool's Day.

What is April Fool's Day?

April Fools' Day is an "annual holiday that consists of practical jokes, pranks and hoaxes. Pranksters often unmask their joke by yelling a loud and proud "April Fools'!" at their victim. This custom has been observed for hundreds of years."

(Source: Reader's Digest)

The Origin Story:

April Fool's Day, celebrated annually on April 1st, has an uncertain origin. While its precise origins remain unclear, some historians trace it's roots back to the change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in the late 16th century. In France, those who failed to recognize the shift and continued to celebrate the New Year during the last week of March through April 1st, they became the subjects of ridicule.  (Source: https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/april-fools-day)

What it Teaches Us:

Embrace Lightness:

April Fool's Day reminds us of the importance of embracing lightness in life. In our pursuit of success and ambition, it's easy to get weighed down by stress and seriousness. Allowing ourselves moments of playfulness and laughter can be incredibly rejuvenating for our well-being.

Cultivate Resilience:

Falling victim to a harmless prank on April Fool's Day teaches us resilience. I know from personal experience! It's a reminder that setbacks and surprises are inevitable in life, but it's our response to them that truly matters. By learning to laugh at ourselves and bounce back from setbacks, we strengthen our resilience muscles.

Build Connection: Engaging in April Fool's Day pranks fosters a sense of camaraderie and connection. It's an opportunity to bond with friends, family, and colleagues through shared laughter and playful banter. Cultivating strong social connections is a cornerstone of well-being, and April Fool's Day provides a fun way to strengthen those bonds. As long as the pranks are harmless!

Well-Being Practices Inspired by April Fool's Day:

Practice Playfulness: Incorporate moments of playfulness into your daily routine. Whether it's telling a joke, playing a harmless prank on a friend, or indulging in a creative hobby, allow yourself to embrace the lighter side of life.

Cultivate Resilience: Approach challenges with a resilient mindset. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, see them as opportunities for growth and learning. Remember, it's not about avoiding obstacles but rather how we navigate through them.

Prioritize Connection: Make time for meaningful connections with others. Reach out to friends or colleagues and plan a fun activity together. Whether it's a virtual game night or a coffee date, nurturing your social support network is vital for your overall well-being.

A Personal Reflection:

I remember back in college, falling prey to an April Fool's Day prank that my roommates had conspired. As I entered our apartment after a long day of tennis practice and class, I was greeted by a firecracker as I opened the door, which took me by surprise however none of my roommates could be found so I kept walking into the apartment. I first went to the fridge, another firecracker burst, again I was taken by surprise but once again no one was around so I decided to go to the bathroom to wash my face and hands, again firecrackers went off! At this point I didn't know where to turn I went to my room and again firecrackers! At this point, my roommates decided to show themselves as they were laughing so hard they were crying and I stood in my room utterly confused by what was happening. They said they didn't expect me to encounter all the firecrackers, they thought another roommate would stumble upon some of them. However, that is not what happened I set them all off!

I couldn't believe what happened and was glad the fire alarms didn't get set off. While initially startled, I couldn't help but laugh at their creativity and camaraderie. It was a moment that taught me to appreciate the joy that comes from shared laughter and playful connections, even amidst the chaos of daily life.

Reflection Questions:

Think back to a memorable April Fool's Day prank or moment of laughter in your life. How did it make you feel, and what insights did you gain from the experience?

How can you incorporate more playfulness and humor into your daily routine to enhance your overall well-being?

Consider the relationships in your life. How can you nurture and strengthen those connections through shared laughter and playful interactions?

As we say goodbye to March and welcome in April, let's carry the spirit of April Fool's Day with us. Let's infuse our lives with laughter, resilience, and meaningful connections. Remember, well-being is not just about achieving success in our careers; it's about nurturing our inner selves and living a life filled with joy and fulfillment.

With love and light,

Julie

'Jabberwocky'

By Lewis Carroll

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
    Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
    The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
    And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
    And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
    The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
    He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
    He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
    Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
